Your skills
A new calming or coping skill is added each module: a small library you build and keep, becoming more automatic over time.
The Guided program · for tinnitus
An evidence-based, coach-guided CBT program for tinnitus-related distress, translated from the clinical protocol so you can work through it at your own pace, with a coach reading your check-ins each week and writing back. The goal is not to promise silence. It is to help the sound stop running your attention, sleep, and life.
Strong evidence base: Cochrane review, VA/DoD guideline, multiple RCTs.
What “Guided” means
The evidence for this approach is strongest when human guidance is included, so Kodama pairs the program with a trained coach who reads your check-ins and writes back. Every module follows the same rhythm.
One module at a time. Each builds on the last, so the order matters, but the pace is yours. A module can take a week, or longer.
A few minutes looking back at the week: what the tinnitus took, what helped, and what was harder. Your answers are saved securely in Practice Better.
They reflect what you reported, reinforce the program’s built-in guidance, and point you to the material that fits, without controlling your pace or changing your protocol.
Three threads
Rather than starting over each week, three threads carry through the whole program and grow as you go.
A new calming or coping skill is added each module: a small library you build and keep, becoming more automatic over time.
A simple daily note of how much attention and distress the sound took, what was happening around it, and what shifted it. Not to score the sound, but to notice patterns.

The modules
Each module targets a specific part of the alarm (understanding, arousal, attention, thoughts, or avoidance), and the skills stack as you go.
Part 01
Getting oriented: why tinnitus becomes intrusive, and the first conditions that help the system settle.
Why tinnitus distresses the way it does, and your first tool, sound enrichment.
Part 02
Bringing the physical alarm down, rebuilding rest, and proving that attention can move.
Progressive muscle relaxation and calm imagery, to bring the physical alarm down.
A fast calming skill, rethinking what the sound means, and rebuilding rest.
Learning, and proving to yourself, that attention to the sound is a choice.
Part 03
Answering the thoughts underneath distress and returning, gradually, to what tinnitus has narrowed.
Catching the fearful thinking and reshaping it: the core cognitive work.
Graded steps back into life, each one tested by a small experiment.
Facing the sound without bracing, and learning to ride out the flare-ups.
Part 04
Making the full set of skills durable, including a plan for future wobbles.
Consolidation, a personal relapse plan, and measuring how far you’ve come.
Included in the program
The reading is only one part of the program. Enrollment, measurement, and follow-up give the work a consistent structure from beginning to end.
Your eligibility, history, consents, and baseline questionnaires are completed securely in Practice Better before the program begins.
Unlocked after enrollmentBrief weekly check-ins and fuller midpoint and final measures help you see change clearly. Your coach can reflect the patterns shown in your responses.
Read by your coachFollow-up check-ins help you maintain the gains, use your wobble plan early, and reconnect with support before a difficult stretch grows.
Included in the programBefore you start
If yours isn’t here, the enrollment process answers most of it, and your coach can point you to the relevant program guidance.
Most people take about a week per module, so the full arc is usually around two months, but the pace is yours, and there is no falling behind. Weekly coach guidance is included for a three-month guided period (room to spare at the typical pace), and if life intervenes, you can ask for an extension. Your module materials stay available for twelve months.
A trained coach. They read what you report and write back, reflecting the program’s guidance, helping you notice patterns, and pointing you to the material that fits what you shared.
No. The evidence-based goal is to reduce tinnitus distress and its effect on attention, sleep, mood, and daily life. Many people notice the sound less as the alarm around it settles, but silence is not promised.
You will not begin the program. Your payment is refunded in full, and Kodama points you toward the kind of care that is more appropriate: a person, not another unsuitable program.
Recovery isn’t a straight line. Good weeks and flat weeks are both normal, and a spike is information, not failure. The program ends by helping you build a personal plan for exactly those weeks.
